I read to about 50 of the older girls at camp and they couldn’t have been a more enthusiastic audience. It was probably the best and most specific batch of questions I’ve ever gotten after a reading. I especially loved when they would ask me questions about what camp was like way back in my day. I felt like they thought I was old enough to say “Well, we didn’t have running water or even walk upright back then, but the canoes still look the same.” The truth was that camp was amazingly how I remember it with just a few jazzy updates and way less Umbro shorts.
I had two stand-out favorite questions from the readings. The first was “Were you anything special when you were a camper…like, were you Color War captain or did you have a boyfriend?” I had to tell her that I was absolutely nothing special at camp and the director jumped in to say something about how even if you’re just regular, you can turn out like me, which I thought was a compliment of the highest order.
The second great question was when another girl asked me what the Polar Bear Club was. Because I was nothing special, I was never in the Polar Bear Club, but I told her what the club was and what you had to do to get in. Then the entire gaggle of girlies freaked out. ”Now we know the secret!” one yelled in triumph. I had no idea it was a huge camp secret. A room full of 12 and 13-year-olds suckered me! I was totally knocked off my high just-regular-girl-made-good horse.
